Background. The national unity and integrity of the Russian Federation is largely determined by the relations that develop between the various ethnic and confessional groups traditionally residing on its territory. Centuries-old coexistence within the framework of one state has formed a feeling of group solidarity among the multiethnic and multi-confessional population of Russia. At the same time, global reproduction in the mass consciousness of national and religious values has not only positive, but also negative consequences (ethnic separatism, religious fundamentalism, etc.). The purpose of the work is to determine the dominant tendencies of interethnic and inter-confessional relations, as well as to specify the scope of manifestation of inter-ethnic and inter-confessional tension in the Republic of Mordovia.
Materials and methods. The collection of primary sociological information was carried out by the method of full-time questioning of respondents at the place of residence. The sample size is 670 people. Representatives of all municipal districts of the republic were interviewed. The sample for the mass survey was formed from the respondents from 18 years of age and older according to the stratified sampling scheme with organization of the steps according to the territorial principle. At the last stage of selection, a quota sample was used (quotas for the age and sex structure of the adult population). The results were processed using the SPSS software package version 19.0.
Results. In general, the ethno-confessional sphere of the Republic of Mordovia can be characterized as stable. According to the results of a sociological survey, about 90 % of respondents, assessing interethnic and inter-confessional relations, consider them benevolent. At the same time, with unfavorable developments, there is a possibility of exacerbation of interethnic relations, since every fourth respondent experiences dislike or distrust of representatives of other nationalities, especially natives of the Central Asian and North Caucasian regions, adherents of Islam.
Conclusions. To prevent possible conflicts on the basis of interethnic and interconfessional relations, it is necessary to implement the following activities: carrying out activities aimed at countering the formation of closed ethnic communities of migrants, primarily through more active involvement of national public associations, national cultural autonomies in adaptation activities migrants; involvement of civil society institutions and Internet providers to counter propaganda of extremism in social networks; improvement of the monitoring system of the state of interethnic and interethnic situation in the Republic of Mordovia.
